Dal is not thin and usually has a medium to a thick consistency. You can adjust the amount of water you want when you prepare it.
This is one pot recipe where all the ingredients are cooked together in a pressure cooker
Quick & Easy
- ½ cup tuvar dal (arhar dal, pigeon pea lentils) or half-half of tuvar dal and masoor dal
- 1.5 cups water
- 1 medium sized onion, finely chopped
- 1 medium sized tomato, finely chopped
- Garlic pods 2 to 3
- Chilli powder 1 tsp
- Turmeric Powder 1/2 tsp
- Salt as required
- Coriander leaves
FOR TADKA
- Cumin seeds 1 tsp
- Dry red Chili 1
- Garlic pods 2 nos
- Oil / Ghee 1 tsp
METHOD
- In a pressure cooker add dal, onions, tomato,garlic, red chili powder,turmeric powder
- Cook for 4 to 5 whistles
- Once the cooker is opened slightly Mash everything well.
- Add salt at this point ( do not add salt while boiling dal )
- Heat oil in a pan once oil is hot add in cumin seeds
- Once cumin seeds splatters add garlic pods and dry red chili and saute for a min
- Add tadka to dal
- Serve it hot with rice or roti
